In Stillness

It’s been 23 hours.  I am in a cabin in the woods on my friends’ property.  I am here for a 36 hour solo.  This is something I wanted to do – spend 36 hours alone in the woods with only my drum, rattle and journal.  There is no electricity, no TV, no iPod, no running water.  I wanted stillness.

I have to admit the thought of doing this scared me a little.  Oh, not the alone in the woods part or even the rustic accommodations (I’ve done much worse).  But I forced myself to leave all my books at home.  I have only my thoughts for company.

I have always loved the woods.  I love to hike and snowshoe.  But when you have nothing but time – to simply BE in the woods, the experience is much deeper.

I listened to the symphony of the creek moving over the rocks for a good part of the morning.  I noticed how the sun glistened on the surface of the water, shimmering crystals of light.  I listened to the wind and watched the tree branches dance.  I listened to the birds, the bees and even the mosquitoes.  I became an observer – totally present – and I experienced everything. I have been truly living in the moment.

So I have been thinking…. How many moments of our life do we miss?  How many times are we thinking about the next thing we need to do, while doing something else? How much do we miss by not listening, hearing, feeling what someone else is saying?  Sometimes we have a hard time remembering what we did yesterday or what we had for breakfast.  Life seems to be speeding by.  How much are we missing by not being in the moment?

Our lives are busy and stressful and we have too many things to do.  But life is so precious, and we are missing it.  Would it take a serious illness or disaster for us to slow down and put things into perspective?  To appreciate the moments?

The stillness of these woods is profound.  It is clear to me that in stillness I am living every moment.  I am living.   It may not be as easy to find the stillness in my everyday life away from these woods, but this experience has reminded me that I want to live the moments of my life.

Take a really long, deep breath right now.  At the end of the exhale, simply stop for just a moment.  Feel the stillness?  If only for a second or two?  Do you feel the peace in that stillness? With practice and awareness we can train ourselves to truly live – not just live in our heads.

In the stillness of the moment there is peace.  There is LIFE.  This stillness, seemingly void of anything – contains everything, and the connection to all that is.  And in this stillness my heart understands Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I Am God.”
